Life

  • It's Life Jim, but not as we know it.

  • Click here for a demo.

  • This script demonstrates the set of rules known as Life, which are as follows:
If a square is off, it turns on if exactly three of its neighbours are on. If a square is on, it stays on if exactly two or three neighbours are on; otherwise it turns off.

  • To make it do something, simply activate several adjacent cells and click 'Run'. A cell is toggled on or off by clicking on it.

  • You will see that some of the cells stay on, some of them stay off and others can't seem to make up their mind whether to be on or off. This is Life.

  • Use the 'Step' button to confirm that the cells are in fact following the rules as described above.

  • For more information on this subject see Exploring Emergence.
